After spending some peaceful time at the Dargah, and enjoying the mouthwatering cuisines at the nearby market, we moved towards the next and the last destination of our Mumbai trip - Mount Mary church.
It took us a considerable time to reach the Church. Mount Mary Church that is devoted to 'Virgin Mary’ is a famous Roman Catholic Church. This ancient holy church was constructed in the year 1640 and was later rebuilt in 1761. This beautiful church is located at the amazing location, at the top of hill 'Sunderban Bandra' that overlooks the majestic Arabian Sea.
The church is also known as 'The Basilica of Our Lady of the Mount'. The place is considered blessed and is believed to have magical healing powers. This is the reason; many devotees visit the church every day. The church is also considered to fulfill the wishes of its devotees. We reached atop the hill to visit the holy place, and also to witness the beautiful sight of the sea. Many tourists were present their, who apart from paying homage to the Marry, came to view the wonderful site. The church is located atop the hill that is about 80 m above sea level and provides a glorious viewof the Arabian sea, especially the site of setting sun.
The architecture of the Mount Mary church seemed to be inspired from the British structural designs. This structure, which is around 100 years old, looks even more striking with its scenic
environment. Within the church was established a 16th century statue of “our lady”.
One interesting ritual is performed at the church. People, who suffer from any kind of disease, bring wax figures that depict their illness to Mount Mary. It is believed that by doing this, Mary will cure their illness and will shower her blessings.
A week of celebration is held at church in the month of September, known as the 'Bandra Fair' or the 'Feast of Mount Mary', when a number of stalls are held and the church is beautifully decorated. It is a perfect time to visit the church. We were delighted to visit the city of Mumbai that offered us such pleasing sites to visit.
