Shillong Golf Course is one of the largest golf courses in Asia and one of the landmarks in Shillong. It is also one of the oldest in the world and is at an altitude of 5200 feet above the sea level. It was I 1898 that golf was introduced in Shillong by the British. It started with 9 hole golf course and later, in 1924 it was turned in to 18 hole golf course. It is a very picturesque place with pine trees and rhododendron trees and is visited by many people. It is not open only to those who play golf, but also to the common people. The place is used as a picnic spot too, by many people.
I visited the place on morning and saw that a lot of people were there, taking morning walk, exercising, playing etc. The place was very beautiful with lush green lawns and tall trees. The cool
air was fresh and rejuvenating. I could hear the chirping of birds as I walked. There were many birds here on the trees, which looked very colorful and pretty. At a distance I could see some boys
playing badminton and they seemed to be thoroughly enjoying their game. Some people were standing and watching them play.
I walked for half an hour and then sat down to relax. Some of the people were jogging around the area. Most of seemed to be regular visitors who lived in the nearby area. Many of them were greeting each other as if they knew each other for a long time. There were some shops and small restaurants near the Golf Course from where the visitors had tea, coffee and some snacks. Since it was a cool morning I had a cup of hot tea from one of the restaurants.
The natural beauty of the place attracts tourists and the local people alike. It is often known as the ‘Gleneagles of the East’ because it resembles very much the Gleneagles by the United States Golf Association Museum. At the end of the Golf Course is the Golf Club House, which is built in the British style. Those who visit the place visit the club house too.
